How Much To Hire A Skip? And Other frequently asked questions.

Skip Hire F.A.Qs

We have used our experience in the industry to comprise a list of frequently asked questions. If you have a question that's not listed below, or if you have any further queries, please don't hesitate to get in touch with our team on 01913 360811 or alternatively use the contact form on the right to forward your query.

What size skip do I need?

This is one of the most common questions we are asked in our day-to-day operations. The size of the skip you require is dependent on the size and nature of your project. Skips are measured in cubic yards, which is roughly 90cm x 90cm x 90cm. In more relatable terms, the size of a standard small white freezer.

Our smallest mini-skips are three cubic yards in volume. In household terms, approximately 30 full black bin bags. They are compact enough to fit on most standard driveways and ideal for domestic clearances or small landscaping projects.

On the other end of the spectrum, our largest RO-RO (Roll-on, Roll-off) skips are a generous 40 cubic yards in volume, which is the equivalent to a staggering 400 bin bags! They are suited for larger commercial projects. If you are struggling to decide which skip size is the best for you, the quickest solution would be to give us a call at 01913 360811, where a member of our experienced team will be able to offer professional advice.

Where can I put my skip?

Our smaller skips, from the mini to midi+, are small enough to fit on a standard driveway. Our larger skips, such as our maxi skips, are placed on the road. In which case, a temporary skip permit from the local council should be obtained before the skip is delivered.

Our most substantial skips, such as RO-RO skips, are hired for commercial projects and are placed on construction sites. Because of the weight of the skip, you should carefully consider the quality of the surface on which you put the skip.

Do I need a skip permit?

If the skip is too large, or if you choose to place the skip on the public road, you will need a skip permit from the local council. If this is the case, please make sure the application is processed and the permit granted before the delivery of the skip.

As the customer, it is your responsibility to submit an application. However at Ward Bros Plant Hire we understand that hiring a skip isn't a daily occurrence and the paperwork can cause unexpected stress. As experts in the industry, we can provide guidance and help through the application process. When the skip is placed on the road, you should also provide sufficient lights and hazard warning signs to warn road users.

How wide does my driveway need to be?

The precise dimension of our skips are available upon enquiry, but our smaller skips can be placed on a standard single driveway. If you put the skip entirely on your private property, you don't require a permit from the council, although there are still things you should consider. The first thing is access: when a skip is on your driveway, do you have enough room to access your property? If your car is usually parked in the driveway, is there a convenient alternative location to park your car?

You should also consider the impact of the skip to your property. When we deliver and collect the skip, we will take great care in placing the skip, so it doesn't damage your property. However, driveways made of certain materials, such as soft tarmac, have been known to fail from time to time. The incline of the path can sometimes also cause a problem. If you are placing the skip in your garden, it's recommended that you avoid any trees and flowers. If you are concerned about the impact of the skip, we would recommend placing plywood boards over the location you want to put the skip to reinforce the surface.

What can I put in my skip?

We accept non-hazardous, solid waste, including most household furniture and construction materials. You don't need to separate your waste as we will sort it accordingly when the skip is transported back to our on-site recycling facility.

Here is a short list of things we do not accept in our skips:
Asbestos: As a hazardous material, asbestos must never be mixed with other wastes in a skip. It should only be disposed of by a specialist company following the current legislation.
Batteries: Even small, alkaline batteries should not be placed in a skip. Because of the metals and chemicals in them, they should be taken to your local battery recycling station, such as your local supermarket.
Tyres: There are strict regulations regarding the disposal of vehicle tyres and where they should go, and a skip isn't one of them.
Medical Waste: Medical waste refers to used needles, used bandages and tissues. They should not be placed in a skip due to the risk of infection and contamination. Blister packs for tablets/capsules are not considered medical waste.
Gas cylinders: Full or empty, the residual contents of a gas cylinder, even small aerosol cans, can be dangerous.
Electrical Appliances: Although commonly used as a size guide for skip volumes, white appliances such as fridge/freezers are not allowed in skips. This includes TVs, monitors and microwaves. They must be taken to a licensed WEEE recycling facility.
Solvents:The category extends to empty paint tins, fuel and other chemical compounds- they often contain a cocktail of hazardous materials such as mercury and must be disposed of by a licensed hazardous waste company.

  What happens to my waste?

After we collect your skip, it's taken to our on-site recycling facility where it's carefully sorted. We are Licensed Waste Carriers and work in compliant with the Waste Regulations 2011. We adhere strictly to the Waste Hierarchy as outlined to maximise the effectiveness of waste disposal and reducing the impact of the environment.

Re-use: Any re-usable material like wood, rubble and hardcore is reclaimed. We will carefully trace the material back to its origins to ensure it's safe to use.
Recycle: We will recover any materials which can be recycled, such as paper and plastic, which can be placed back into the supply chain and reincarnated as another useful product.
Disposal:Unfortunately, for some hazardous materials such as asbestos, landfill and chemical treatment is the only option. This is usually the last resort for materials which cannot be processed by any of the previous processes.

  Do you collect surplus materials?

It's not uncommon to have leftover construction material after a renovation project- after all, having a surplus is better than being caught short. If you find yourself with extra concrete, timber or any bricks you no longer need, Ward Bros Plant Hire will be more than happy to take them off your hands.

By reclaiming materials and diverting material from landfill, we can help to reduce the impact on the environment. We could arrange collection of surplus materials even if you didn't hire a skip from us. Simply give us a call on 01913 360811 or use the contact form to send us an e-mail.

How long can we hire the skip for?

Our hire terms are flexible to suit our customer's needs. From a short-term hire as short as the same day to longer periods up to several weeks. If you are hiring a professional contractor, they can often advise on approximately how long the project should take.

For ongoing home renovations, we would either recommend hiring a smaller skip and have it exchanged as and when required. In the long term, this is a more cost-effective solution to hiring a larger skip for the same duration. If you wish to discuss a bespoke hiring plan to suit your needs, please don't hesitate to give us a call.

  What areas do you cover?

Our central depot is in Durham, and we additionally have six depots in the following areas:

What if my skip needs collecting sooner than expected?

If your skip has filled up sooner than you expected, just give us a call on {phone_name} to arrange an early collection. If possible, we will always aim to make a collection on the same or next following working day.

If you have overestimated the size of the skip and found yourself with additional waste to dispose of, we will be more than happy to exchange the skip for an empty one to accommodate the extra waste. Please note that there is an additional charge for this service.

What If I need my skip for longer than expected?

In which case, simply give us a call on 01913 360811 before the arranged collection time and we can arrange for your hire terms to be adjusted as required. We understand that even with meticulous planning, surprises such as delays can occur. This is why we've grown to be flexible to suit your needs.

Please note that although we are flexible with the skip hire terms, the local council may not be as generous. If your skip is placed on the public road and required a skip permit, you will need to notify the council for an extension if you find yourself behind schedule.
